Winter Adventure Bird Brain?

The Birdathon has become a tradition amongst our campers at Haliburton Forest. One day a year during the spring migration we ask all professional and amateur birders alike to scour the forest in search of their 2 legged, feather friends. Some participants have figured that it is just as much fun to sit back and let the birds come to them. Either way the information collected is equally as important in assisting Haliburton Forest in its long-term monitoring of bird population.

Included: A bird check list, the chance to win great bird prizes and a fun filled day!

Cost: Although the Birdathon is free, regular admission fees to the Forest do apply. Everyone is welcome!

Arts, Culture & Heritage Whip-poor-will populations in Ontario and elsewhere have declined by more than 50% since the 1980s. This iconic species is now listed as a threatened species at risk in Ontario and Canada. In 2010, Bird Studies Canada launched the Ontario Whip-poor-will project to find out more about where Whip-poor-wills are (and aren't) still present. This informative presentation will describe the natural history of this nocturnal species and the various decline. Following the presentation we hope to be able to hear the call of the lonesome Whip-poor-will.

Andrea Dickinson, a local food instructor, cooks regularly with local food.  Attending the farmer’s market, getting to know local farmers and buying seasonal produce allows for great inspiration in the kitchen.  Andrea has lived in Central Frontenac for ten years and many of you may remember her as Owner/Chef of Sunsets Restaurant, or perhaps you’ve attended one of her cooking classes at Crow Lake Schoolhouse.   She has an extensive background in cooking, baking, catering, event coordination and food safety, with an emphasis on healthy cooking.  Throughout the course of the Cooking Workshops, participants can feel comfortable asking Andrea questions pertaining not only to cooking technique but also how to adapt recipes for allergies or low-carb, low-sugar diets.  Participants will learn to incorporate local available products into their everyday cooking habits and have fun learning new recipes and techniques. Visit our website later for more details on each workshop.

Building on the very successful 150th Anniversary in June of 2012, where the public resoundingly commented that the Town should be holding an annual musical event as was held in the past, the Town of Arnprior heard you and here we go!

The Town is staging an annual one-day music festival, with the inauguration to take place on Saturday June 8th, 2013. This event will showcase and promote the work of local musical artists, celebrate Arnprior heritage and encourage a strong sense of community to tourists and local residents alike!

How can you get involved? If you are an artist, then we'd like to hear you play! Please fill out the Artist Application form found on-line and submit it to be considered for the show.

If you are a volunteer and want to help out, let us know by sending an email to arnprior@arnprior.ca and watch for opportunities to get involved on the Town's website.

If you have any questions, please contact Lynn Grinstead at lgrinstead@sympatico.ca or at 613-623-3346.

“From the moment I heard the opening notes of the hauntingly beautiful ballad “stranger”, I was hooked. Derek McGrath is a storyteller, reminiscent of Harry Chapin or john Hiatt. He populates his songs with characters we might see every day but have never really taken a closer look at.” - Ron Lea

People will often ask me what kind of music I play. It's been called “roots music” whatever that means. Pretty much all of my songs begin on an acoustic guitar, most of them on my old Taylor. They're songs about longing, dreaming, disappointment, solitude, loves won and loves lost. In short, they're songs about the journey. My music has been influenced by the beautiful pain I've found in the songs of Jackson Browne, the raw poetry of Bob Dylan, the soaring passion of Van Morrison, the rustic sophistication of The Eagles and the brilliant melodies of Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

"I try to tell the truth, or at least a truth. I try to express my truth in away that makes the listener feel it more than conceive it. Where do my songs come from? I'm not sure… But I love going there."

In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, a child’s life in rural areas focused largely on work. There was work to do in the fields, in trades and businesses, and there was much work to do at home. This program focuses on a child's role and responsibilities during the period from 1890 thru 1910. Students will gain an understanding of the domestic life of children in rural areas including an exploration of the growing importance of a formal education.

Goals
• To give students insight into how the lives of children in the past differed from their own.
• To demonstrate the importance of the child's role in the home and society.
• To transform historical and cultural lessons learned in the classroom to real life, hands-on and practical experience.

July is the perfect time of year to discover the over 80 species of butterfly in the Haliburton Highlands. And last summer a "critically imperilled" dragonfly - known previously from only four locations in Canada - was discovered in Dahl Forest. Contrary to its name, the Common Sanddragon is known to exist in only a few creeks, all of which are in Peterborough County. Join Colin James and Ed Poropat as they introduce you to the rich diversity of butterflies and dragonflies that make their home in Dahl Forest. You will wander through open areas covered in wildflowers and surrounded by a variety of exceptional habitats - forest, swamp, marsh and river shoreline - supporting a variety of butterflies and dragonflies. Some nets and collection containers will be provided, but if you have your own, please bring them. Good walking shoes/boots and weather appropriate clothing are recommended.

Cycling To discover some of the most beautiful cycling routes in Eastern Ontario while raising funds for the Ottawa Velodrome Project

The Champlain’s Folly Cyclosportif is an all-new cycling event in the Ottawa Valley that will introduce riders to some of the most scenic and historic parts of eastern Ontario and raise funds for an indoor velodrome in Ottawa.

Champlain’s Folly will set off from Arnprior on Sunday, July 14, one day after the Ottawa Bicycle Club Grand Prix event in Gatineau Park. Riders will enjoy a choice of three scenic and challenging routes of 60 km, 120 km and 180 km northeast along the Ottawa River, in an area first charted by famed French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1613. It’s in this region that Champlain reputedly lost his astrolabe while scrambling along a portage route in his quest for a route to China — Champlain’s Folly indeed.

It took 254 years for Champlain’s astrolabe to be found, but in just a few hours Champlain’s Folly participants will discover some of the finest — and least-known — cycling roads in Ontario in a safe, well-supported event. Every rider will receive a bag of goodies, there will be feeding stations regularly spaced along the well-marked routes and emergency support in case anyone gets into difficulty, and participants can swap riding stories at the post-event meal.

All the proceeds from the Champlain’s Folly Cyclosportif will go to the Ottawa Velodrome Project, the not-for-profit corporation that has been set up to create an indoor velodrome. Registration details for the Champlain’s Folly Cyclosportif will be provided within a few weeks.

This gentle reminiscence reveals that in fact those times are still part of our lives, if we will only look around us. Funny and touching at the same time, this play has become a classic of the North American stage since it was first performed in 1938. With its large cast and interwoven story, patrons are sure to recognize a character or two they already know on stage.

Perth, ON

Date: Aug 14th, 2013 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Arts, Culture & Heritage Festivals & Events

Experience the life of a mica miner in the early 1900’s at this unique Dinner/Theatre event. Working underground, lots of black powder and mucking out, missing your family, partying up a storm on Saturday nights and eating in the miners’ bunkhouse under the watchful eye of “Cookie”, the mining camp cook were all part of the miners’ life.

Meet your fellow guests at the Lally parking area and follow our character actors as they unroll the story in a series of theatre/storytelling vignettes along the Silver Queen Mine trail and underground into the mine. Your evening is topped off when you enter the miners’ bunkhouse to join 30 other guests for a full hot dinner at the trestle tables while itinerant musicians from the band Cratur provide entertainment. The bunkhouse is lit by mica lanterns, your food is served by Cookie and his assistant and you can visit with the spirits of the miners.

Tickets are $75.00 per person and must be purchased in advance through our website (price includes all taxes, gratuities and vehicle entry fees). Note that it is about a 2 km return trip walk from the parking area to the mine site. Dogs are not permitted at this event due to regulations surrounding the food service.

Taste of the Valley: Barry's Bay Railway Museum & Farmer's Market

Barry's Bay Railway Museum
19503 Opeongo Line
Barry's Bay, ON
Ottawa Valley South

Date: Aug 16th, 2013 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

countyofrenfrew.on.ca/departments/h…

Festivals & Events Taste of the Valley is an exposition of local food, crafts and products that are produced by local residents. Taste of the Valley events are community events that help introduce both visitors and local residents to the many unique agricultural products available in the region. In 2013, Taste of the Valley will be held in the following communities:

Friday, August 16th - 10:00 am to 5 pm: Barry’s Bay Railway Museum & Farmers Market
Saturday, September 21st - 8 am to 3 pm: Renfrew Armouries and Fairgrounds
Saturday, October 5th - 10 am to 3 pm: Deep River Municipal Hall & Grounds
Saturday, October 19th - 8 am to 3 pm: Cobden Fairgrounds
Taste of the Valley is, first and foremost, a celebration of local foods and products. The Elected Officials of the County of Renfrew are insisting that, where possible, all products be produced within the County of Renfrew. As such, preference will also be given to food vendors to occupy indoor space when available. There are some instances where this is not possible, but the goal of the event is to promote “made in Renfrew County products.” Residents interested in showcasing their products at one of the Taste of the Valley events are invited to submit an application form the Organizing Committee. In addition, any vendor serving food products is required to complete a Special Food Vendor application. Both applications can be downloaded from the applications located at the bottom of this page.

There are some changes to the registration process for the 2013 Taste of the Valley events, most notably that registration will be done through an individual community contact, not through the County of Renfrew as has been done in the past.

Vendor applications will be updated shortly.

Arts, Culture & Heritage Festivals & Events

Each year Pikwàkanagàn welcomes hundreds of dancers, numerous drum groups and thousands of spectators to celebrate Algonquin culture at our traditional pow wow. It is held on the third weekend in August.

Visitors are attracted to our dance, songs, drumming and experiencing an Algonquin cultural tradition. There is also opportunity to view and purchase unique items at our many vendors selling: jewelry, crafts, art, clothing, beadwork, leather purses, regalia, drums, CD’s, dreamcatchers, moccasins and many other items. Another attraction is the variety of food vendors offering Indian Tacos, native foods and other treats.

Please remember that this is a ceremony. The songs that are sung and the dances that are danced are prayers to the Creator. The Grand Entry is a ceremony, so is the lighting of the Sacred Fire. Many people will approach the Spiritual Leader for prayers for their health or that of their family.

Days prior to the celebration a Sacred Fire is lit and remains ablaze by volunteers for four straight days. An Evening Social is held on Friday and festivities include the initiation of new dancers and new regalia.

The Grand Entry begins at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.

Please remember that this is a ceremony. The songs that are sung and the dances that are danced are prayers to the Creator. The Grand Entry is a ceremony, so is the lighting of the Sacred Fire. Many people will approach the Spiritual Leader for prayers for their health or that of their family.

There are rules that govern a Pow Wow as well. All dancing revolves clockwise from the entrance, situated in the east, around the central arbour. Carrying flags and staffs in the Grand Entry is an honour. Songs are sung for fallen Veterans and for those returning from battle. The flags and staffs are retired each day at sunset.

No alcohol, drugs or pets are permitted on the Pow Wow grounds.

Note: (from the book Anishnabe 101, by The Circle of Turtle Lodge)

"It is important that the clothing, footwear, head dresses, etc. that a dancer wears be referred to as 'regalia' and not as a 'costume'. A costume is something for any actor to wear as he/she pretends to be someone else. A dancer's regalia is a collection of gifts that honour his or her spiritual name and/or clan. Each is considered as sacred, and when worn together, the dancer becomes who he or she truly is, for all to see.

Celebrate the Scottish culture and heritage of the Ottawa Valley at the 29th annual North Lanark Highland Games in Almonte, on Saturday, August 24th, 2012. Our games are held in the historic town of Almonte at the beautiful old grounds of the North Lanark Agricultural Society on the banks of Ontario's Mississippi River.

The Games offer a traditional format and size attracting about 6,000 visitors. Twenty pipe bands, a hundred dancers and champion heavyweight athletes combine to present what is recognized as one of the Ottawa Valley's premier summer events.

With mini games organized for kids and the picturesque Mississippi as the backdrop, the Almonte games have a reputation not only as having the prettiest site but also as being the friendliest games on the Ontario circuit.

The grounds feature numerous Scottish concessions, where visitors may obtain traditional clothing, Scottish food, refreshments, souvenir items, crafts and genealogical information.

Parking is free off-site with a convenient free shuttle service provided.

The games start at 9:00am, opening ceremonites are at 1:00pm, with final massed bands at 5:30pm and in the evening, a ceilidh (Scottish party) will be held at the beer garden site, with live musical entertainment by Corkery Road.

Taste of the Valley events are community events that help introduce both visitors and local residents to the many unique agricultural products available in the region. In 2013, Taste of the Valley will be held in the following communities: Friday, August 16th - 10:00 am to 5 pm: Barry’s Bay Railway Museum & Farmers Market Saturday, September 21st - 8 am to 3 pm: Renfrew Armouries and Fairgrounds Saturday, October 5th - 10 am to 3 pm: Deep River Municipal Hall & Grounds Saturday, October 19th - 8 am to 3 pm: Cobden Fairgrounds Taste of the Valley is, first and foremost, a celebration of local foods and products. Perth, ON
Ottawa Valley South

Date: Oct 12th, 2013 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm

heritagemicadays.ca/events.php

Dogs are not permitted at this event due regulations surrounding the food service.

Cost: $75/person
