Make your own history along the historic Rideau Heritage Route, a system of rivers and lakes that passes through a number of communities in Ontario’s Highlands that also has the distinction of being Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. By motorboat, kayak, or canoe a day trip along these waters will bring you closer to nature and closer to an abundance of attractions, too, including museums, festivals, events, art galleries, shopping, and dining.

Start in Smith Falls after stopping in at Coffee Culture for a morning beverage and snack. Then make your way to Murphy’s Point Provincial Park near Perth, where you can cast a fishing line or swim in Rideau Lake. Back in Smiths Falls, dinner at Nick’s Fish and Chips followed by a Movie Under the Stars near the Rideau Canal culminate into the perfect evening.

For more boating day trip ideas and other water activities in this region, visit the Rideau Heritage Route website.

What sets the Rideau apart from other lakes and river systems is its rich history. The oldest continuously operated canal in North America, the locks work today much as they did when first opened in 1832.
